I’m addicted to coffee. I have tried to quit only to instantaneously purchase another cup…or three. As a student I am convinced I need it. But it doesn’t make me feel great. Days of coffee reliance result in my nervous system feeling shot and overall dehydration, among other things.

A friend suggested that I drink hot water instead; the placebo effect of the hot liquid might be just enough to give me that extra kick, she explained, while providing all the benefits that come from drinking water. Although a little skeptical, I decided to give it a try.

Have you ever ordered a cup of hot water with your biscotti? The baristas at my local coffee shop had a laugh, but perhaps the joke is on them?

Below are 12 ways that increasing hot water intake can benefit your health.

1. Digestion

I have a sensitive stomach, so I tend to experience discomfort after most meals. I find that if I sip hot water prior to a meal, and have some more following, not only does my stomach calm down, the discomfort goes away within minutes. Hot water charges my system, easing the initial digestion, and helps with breaking down food once intake is complete.

2. Bowel Movements

 Speaking of digestion, hot water can help keep you regular, as well as make your bowel movements healthy and pain free. Dehydration can result in chronic problems with constipation. As stool accumulates inside your intestine, the movement of the bowel becomes slower. Consuming a glass of hot or warm water every morning decomposes any remnant foodstuffs and makes the movement of the particles smooth and less painful through the intestine.

3. Metabolism

Hot water is great for maintaining a healthy metabolism, which is what most of us are setting out to do during summer months. The best way to do this is to kick start your metabolism early in the morning with a glass of hot water and lemon. As an added bonus, hot water will help to break down the adipose tissue (aka body fat) in your body. Anytime I feel sluggish or bloated, hot water is my quick fix.

4. Menstrual Cramps 

Hot water can also aid in diminishing menstrual cramps. The heat of the water has a calming and soothing effect on the abdominal muscles, which can help to reduce pain. My discomfort has been reduced significantly.

Another important benefit of drinking hot water is that it enhances your blood circulation, which is important for proper muscle and nerve activity. In addition, it keeps your nervous system healthy by breaking down the fat deposits around it. I have noticed a dramatic difference in my nerves since replacing coffee with hot water. I don’t feel wired; I feel more stable, albeit energized.

6. Body Detoxification

Hot water is fantastic for helping your body to detox. When you drink hot water, your body temperature begins to rise, which results in sweat. You want this to happen because it helps to release toxins from your body and cleanse it properly. For optimal results, add a squeeze of lemon before drinking.

Normally during winter months my skin gets easily dry and cracked. I normally wake up to dry patches on my face. I can honestly report that I did not experience that phenomenon this winter and I attribute that to upping my hot water intake, as it’s one of the more dramatic changes I’ve made this past year.
