When beauty industry insiders began identifying toxins in nail polish, three main ingredients were up for discussion; Dibutyl Phthalate (DPB), an endocrine disruptor banned in children’s products, Formaldehyde, a human carcinogen, and Toluene, a developmental toxicity hazard. Wary of the toxic trio, brands, like Butter London, are committed to offering products absent of those harmful ingredients.

More recently, a couple of other toxic ingredients have been brought into question. Formaldehyde Resin, a human allergen, and Camphor, a toxic substance linked to seizures and disorientation when used in large doses, are two additional toxic chemicals found in most nail care products.

Luckily, there are a variety of brands committed to creating long-lasting, trendy hues that are cruelty-free, and free of all five chemicals in question. We’ve rounded up our favourites, including some recognizable luxury brands we’ve been lusting over, that might just surprise you.
